Contacts: What To Do If You Ever Get This Call

You’re reading this because someone you know and trust has added you as one of their emergency contacts in The Big Red Button alert system (A personal safety system used during real estate showings and open houses.)

This message explains what the system does… and what your role should be if you ever receive an alert from the system.

What the system does…

The realtor who added you has a  panic button installed on their phone’s home screen. If they ever feel threatened during a showing or open house, they double-tap it and the system IMMEDIATELY plays a loud “back-him-up” warning,  and at the same time places an automated phone call to the 3 emergency contacts that they’ve added to the system. (You’re 1 of the 3.)

The call  is an automated alert … telling you that they’ve activated their panic button and need help. It will tell you the agent’s name and their location.

Your job…

If you ever receive this call, call the agent’s number immediately and ask one question: “Do you need help?”  If they answer “Yes”. the hang up immediately and dial 911.

  • Don’t wait.
  • Don’t drive to the location yourself.
  • Just ASSUME the alert is realm and make the calls.

Your job is simply to get police on the way as fast as possible.

What to tell 911…

Tell the dispatcher the following:

  • I just got safety alert from a real estate agent’s panic button system.
  • The agent’s name is ___.
  • The address is ___.
  • You have no other details. You are only relaying the alert.

This information will be repeated 3 times in the automated message.

Here’s what you should NOT do…

  • Don’t go to the location yourself.
  • Don’t assume it is a false alarm. Treat every alert as real.
  • Don’t delay calling 911 to gather more information first.

EVERYTHING the 911 dispatcher needs will be in the alert call.

Before you’re added as a contact…

Before someone adds you to their call list, make sure you understand and agree to this responsibility. If you are not able to act quickly and call 911 without hesitation, let them know so they can choose a different contact.

If you agree… then right now, save this number in your phone contacts:

Label with something like “EMERGENCY ALERT”… plus the person’s name. This helps make sure the call is not mistakenly blocked or marked as spam by your phone carrier, and it helps you recognize the call instantly if it ever comes in.
